Early in the "DEPARTURE 2001" tour, NOAH ran a tournament to determine a #1 contender for Jun Akiyama's GHC Heavyweight Title. Featuring two veterans, Tamon Honda and Daisuke Ikeda, and two upstarts, Takeshi Morishima and Takeshi Rikio, the future GHC Tag Team Champions would have no luck and Honda would defeat Ikeda in the final, before challenging Akiyama later in the series.
